She s Come Undone By Wally Lamb - 1767 Words

In the book She’s Come Undone by author Wally Lamb, we travel on a journey with a young girl Dolores Prices, as she matures from early childhood to adulthood and all the terrible things that accompany her along her voyage. It was rather intriguing the Wally Lamb did such an excellent job of writing in a first person perceptive as a woman. He accredits his ability to his older sisters. Wally Lamb wrote this book to help emphasize one’s journey to self-discovery. This book’s theme heavily shows the loss of innocence and a coming of age story. Lamb was able to write in a way that many of us could relate to or may have found ourselves in similar situations. This is first seen in Dolor es the day their television is delivered. Instead of being outside and socializing with neighbor kids she exclaims â€Å"television watching became my habit, my day† (Lamb, 5). At the next psychosocial stage, we find Dolores is in stage four of Erikson’s theory, industry vs. inferiority. This is when a child begins to seek approval for their accomplishments, start to hone their skills and complete goals. At this point, Dolores’s family television has taken over most of the family’s time, mom, dad, and even grandma when she visits watches it. She is not going outside to play and is desperately seeking attention from her parents. Her dad is spending a lot of time with his employer, Mrs. Masicotte. When her and her father’s â€Å"meetings† would go too long she would intentionally dare herself to do bad things. Dolores said, â€Å"my actions-each of which invited my father’s anger-shocked and pleased me† (Lamb, 10). The week Dolores spends alone with her father when he is supposed to tell her that they, mom and dad, are getting a divorce, Dolores is ecstatic. She is finally getting the attention from her father instead of him giving it to Mrs. Masicotte. When she was asked about her time spent with her father, Tony, she said, â€Å"we had a blast.
